Leeds have officially lost Junior Firpo ahead of their return to the Premier League after his contract at Elland Road expired last week.

The left-back was a key part of Daniel Farke’s promotion-winning side and became a fan favourite in West Yorkshire after a rough start.

The Dominican international notched four goals and 10 assists last season and will be a huge miss.

Leeds have already missed out on key transfer targets such as Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki this summer, and although his exit was almost guaranteed, Firpo’s departure will upset fans even more.

Firpo highlighted the highs and the lows during his time at Elland Road, with Leeds also releasing a statement and several video tributes.

Firpo’s Championship record last season.

It did come as a surprise to many when the ex-Barcelona man was willing to stick by the Whites in the Championship after relegation in 2023, and for that, he became loved by Leeds fans.

As a result, it was a blow to learn that Firpo was to leave Leeds when his contract came to an end.

Mundo Deportivo has reported in its print edition (pg 18, 5 July) that Real Betis expect Firpo to be announced as their next signing and will sign a three-year deal.

After missing out on plenty of targets this summer, the Whites are now continuing to target new options, with Lille defender Gudmundsson emerging as a potential replacement.

Leeds must avoid key mistakes made by Victor Orta

During Victor Orta’s time at Leeds, 68 signings were made, with many of them mistakes.

Orta notably made the signing of Jean-Kevin Augustin, which caused Leeds a whole host of trouble.

Now that Leeds are back in the Premier League, they must avoid making Orta’s mistakes again, and missing out on targets so far may be a blessing.

As they look to replace Firpo, they must be careful to sign an experienced player who will benefit them, not someone who could cost them down the line.
