Louie Barry is set to leave Aston Villa this summer after failing to break into the first team.

Barry joined Aston Villa in January 2020 as a promising young player straight out of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, but has only managed one senior appearance for the Villans.

He has been on seven different loan spells across the football league, most recently at Hull City, where his season ended prematurely following a serious knee injury.

Fitness issues have unfortunately been a common theme for the Englishman, stunting his development, and he now looks set to leave Unai Emery’s side.

Barry’s move to Hull City collapses

Despite Barry’s injury last season limiting him to just four appearances for the Tigers, Hull City were interested in a permanent deal for the 22-year-old.

However, the striker’s proposed move to Hull fell through due to affordability issues, with the Championship club since placed under a transfer embargo, which they intend to appeal against.

It leaves the talented forward in limbo once again, while the Claret and Blues are still keen to offload the player this summer despite extending his contract in January this year.

Ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes that a newly promoted club could be looking at Barry, and believes both Burnley and Sunderland would be interested in his signature.

“If he isn’t sold, he could be loaned,” King said.

“Teams that have come up from the Championship will be the first ones looking at that, I’d imagine. They will have the money; they can purchase him.

“If Barry and the club feel that his future isn’t at Villa, there will be opportunities at clubs like Sunderland and Burnley. Those clubs will be looking to bring in that kind of player, with a sell-on clause included.”

Villa need more from their academy

Emery is building a strong core of players in their early to mid-twenties at Villa, such as Morgan Rogers and Amadou Onana, who are expected to form the future of the West Midlands outfit for years to come.

However, the Spaniard has very few promising players emerging from the academy, which has been an area of concern for Villa for some time.

Jacob Ramsey is the last key player to make the breakthrough, and with Barry looking likely to leave this summer, the club must make a concerted effort to ensure they replace him with some young talent of their own.
