David Moyes offered Beto a new lease of life following the striker’s initial struggles at Everton.

Beto arrived at Everton full of promise following his £25million-plus move from Udinese in August 2023, but only mustered three goals in his debut season in the Premier League.

For the first half of last season, his fortunes got worse as he started only one game under Sean Dyche before Moyes’ arrival sparked a turnaround.

The Guinea-Bissau international was reinstated as a regular in the first team and finished the campaign as the club’s second top scorer with eight, one behind Iliman Ndiaye.

However, Everton have been tempted to cash in on the centre-forward, and a decision now needs to be made after a new transfer agreement.

Thierno Barry deal is practically secured for Everton

Everton are on theverge of signing Thierno Barry from Villarreal, following a report in Superdeporte (4 July, page 12) stating that the deal is practically secured, provided there are no surprises.

Barry is expected to have his medical with the Toffees in the coming days after over a month of the Blues chasing the France Under-21 international’s signature.

Barry’s statistics for Villarreal (2024/25)

The 22-year-old has seen his stock quickly rise after an exceptional debut season at Villarreal, having arrived from FC Basel the previous summer.

Barry’s arrival could spell trouble for Beto, as he will have sought assurances over his game time and is seen as an exciting prospect that The Friedkin Group will want Moyes to dedicate a lot of attention to.

However, ex-Goodison scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – believes Beto will stay as Moyes is keen on having competition for places in the squad.

“Everton have lost Calvert-Lewin,” King said.

“Therefore, I’d imagine they’re going to keep Beto – that could be quite a good pairing up front, Beto and Barry. It will give Everton another option, that will be the thinking from Moyes.

“That’s how Moyes works, he wants competition for places in the squad. I don’t think there is a necessity to sell; they seem settled financially, and they’re going to generate more revenue from the new stadium. I don’t think Everton have to sell at this moment in time.”

Beto will still have plenty of game time

So far, Barry has proven himself to be very adaptable, as he has transitioned from performing well in the second division of the Belgian League to looking at home in La Liga within just two years.

However, the Premier League will arguably be Barry’s most significant step up thus far, which may require him to take more time to find his feet, affording Beto plenty of game time.

Moyes has also previously utilised two players up front, especially when chasing a game, which could see the two strikers line up alongside each other on numerous occasions next season.
