Manchester United’s summer transfer plans so far have followed a particular plan, which minimises risk.
For years, Manchester United have done transfer business primarily in other top European Leagues; however, this has rarely been successful for the club.
With big-money flops like Antony and Jadon Sancho still plaguing the club, with United telling neither to return to pre-season and instead find an exit, this summer has seen an alternative policy implemented.
Ruben Amorim wants more physicality in his team, with Premier League experience a key factor. So far, this has been followed perfectly by Jason Wilcox with Matheus Cunha, physical and proven in England, while Bryan Mbeumo is also going to tick that box.
Recruiting within the Premier League lessens the risk of a signing and makes it more likely to be successful, with players already being physically and mentally prepared.
However, Ineos should break this philosophy for one South American this summer.

Richard Rios impressive against Chelsea for Palmeiras
Recruiting from within the Premier League was prominent under Sir Alex Ferguson, and a return to this should bring success back to Old Trafford.
However, if straying from this, United must determine whether players from abroad can handle English football. Well, on Friday night, Colombian midfielder Richard Rios may have just answered that question around a potential move this summer.

United scouts have been watching Rios during this summer’s Club World Cup as he has shone brightly with Palmeiras in their run to the quarter-finals before defeat to Chelsea.
But it was in this 2-1 loss against Chelsea that Rios sent the biggest statement yet, proving he can cope with the intensity of Premier League opposition and facing a midfield worth more than Palmeiras’ entire squad cost.
Rios assisted the goal for Palmeiras with a brilliant pass, and his all-around game was impressive, which will be a clear indicator to interested Premier League sides that he is a viable option.
There are believed to be more than 10 clubs interested in signing Rios this summer, with Palmeiras anticipating a bidding war for their prized asset.
How Richard Rios performed against Chelsea
The biggest risk of signing Rios this summer was always going to be whether he could handle Premier League opposition, and against Chelsea, he certainly answered that question.
85 minutes
1 assist
1 shot
90 per cent passing accuracy
39 touches
2/2 tackles won
1 clearance
4 defensive actions
2 recoveries
5 duels won
Palmeiras were the clear underdogs in this game as well, which makes it even more impressive that he played so well.
Rios’ running and pressing are traits Amorim will love if he is to join United, and with an expected value of between £20m and £25m, it is definitely a risk worth taking by Ineos and Wilcox.
