Reading Target Premier League Swoop

Reading are reportedly targetting a move to sign defender Reece Welch from Premier League side Everton this summer.

The 21-year-old spent part of last season out on loan in Belgium, and is yet to gain regular first-team minutes in his career so far, aside from a stint at Forest Green Rovers.

Welch is likely to be available on a permanent deal this summer, remaining under contract at Everton currently but that could be set to change as interest grows.

Reading eye Premier League defender

As reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke, Reading are lining up a permanent deal for former England U20s defender Reece Welch.

The defender’s current contract is set to expire in June 2026, but is likely (not confirmed) to be available on either a cut-price deal or as a free transfer with a sell-on clause added.

Reading are under new ownership heading into the 2025/26 League Oneseason and can begin to be more adventurous in the transfer market – something the club hasn’t been able to do for several transfer windows now.

How did he fare last season?

Welch began the season by featuring for Everton in their EFL Trophy victory against Tranmere Rovers, before heading out on loan to join Belgian second-tier side Deinze on what was supposed to be a season-long loan.

However, he made just two appearances for the club during the first half of the season and was recalled in January.

After returning to Everton, Welch became a regular feature for their U21s in the Premier League 2 and ended the season with two goal contributions in 13 appearances.

Is this a good addition for Reading?

Welch impressed on loan at Forest Green during the 2023/24 season, but has had very limited men’s first-team experience throughout his entire career.

Therefore, for a side like Readingwho need a replacement for Tylor Bindon (amongst others), signing someone like Welch will be seen as a risk.

However, on a cheap permanent deal, the risk is lowered and it will allow the defender to settle and relocate, rather than being moved from pillar to post on separate loan deals – which overtime will limit a players development.
