Jarrad Branthwaite’s contract extension at Everton could come back to haunt David Moyes.
Branthwaite signed a contract extension with Everton on Tuesday (2 July), a contract which was offered as a reward for his performances and to dispel interest from rival Premier League clubs like Chelsea.
The 23-year-old had two years left on his previous deal but has now extended his stay until 2030.
Moyes had prioritised keeping the England international on Merseyside as he looks to guide the Toffees into a new era, but could already regret the decision following a new official announcement.

Michael Keane signs new one-year deal with Everton
Michael Keane’s contract expired in June after the centre-back had spent nearly eight years with the Toffees since joining from Burnley.
MORE TOFFEES STORIES
He was not officially on the release list, alongside Idrissa Gueye, as it had not been decided whether the veterans would sign new deals this summer to extend their stay.
Everton officially announced on Friday (4 July) that Keane had signed a new one-year contract with the Toffees, making him the third defender after Branthwaite and Seamus Coleman to put pen to paper.

Domestic Cups 4 – 1 276′
Keane’s statistics for Everton (2024/25)
The 32-year-old played a bit-part role last season but has plenty of experience that Moyes can draw on, while he remains popular in the dressing room.
However, the Toffees are unlikely to be titillated by this news, as Keane has had more than his fair share of sketchy performances for the Blues.
It could also be a worrying sign that Branthwaite’s lucrative contract extension was a mistake by Everton if it means that The Friedkin Group are out of funds to bring in new players and will resort to cheaper options like Keane.

Everton change won’t come as quickly as fans may hope
Re-signing Keane and Coleman could be a sensible move, but it also suggests that Everton’s rebuild may take longer than fans had hoped.
Both are players whose best days are past them, making a total of 14 Premier League starts between them last season, but they are still needed at Everton just to make up the numbers.
It looks like a handful of marquee signings in the shape of Thierno Barry will be brought in this summer, but Moyes will not have a free hand to overhaul the squad in one swift swoop.
The Scotsman will still have to get a tune out of the veterans on Merseyside and may need patience from the Everton faithful to give him time to build.
