Crystal Palace are said to have submitted a bid for a back-up defender.

Crystal Palace are said to be interested in signing a new left-back this summer, and they have already reportedly submitted an offer. The Eagles are on a mission to strengthen this summer having won the FA Cup and booked a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Oliver Glasner will face a new challenge this season as his side prepare to balance a Premier League campaign with European football for the first time. That’s no easy task, and it will be made no easier by the fact Palace could lose two of their best players this summer.

Marc Guehi is in the final year of his contract, and Palace are likely to have to sell him unless they agree a surprise new contract. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze is being heavily linked with a move away, carrying an affordable release clause worth up to £68million. Arsenal have been linked with a move for the England international this summer.

Depth will be required throughout Glasner’s squad, and it seems the club have already set about bringing in new players. According to David Ornstein, Palace are bidding for Ajax full-back Borna Sosa. He posted on X: “Ajax receive bid from Crystal Palace to sign Borna Sosa. Proposal also made to 27yo #Ajax left-back - among multiple options #CPFC considering for depth alongside Mitchell. No agreements + Croatia international has other suitors but talks ongoing @TheAthleticFC.”

Sosa has previously admitted he wants to play in the Premier League at some point, so a deal with the player shouldn’t be too hard to pull off. He said in 2023 before leaving Stuttgart for Ajax: "Like many players, I dream of playing in the Premier League one day. It's the strongest league in the world. The other teams besides the big six top clubs are also strong."

Sosa also spoke about a proposed move to Bayer Leverkusen that fell through, adding: “Every player sets goals in his career, and I want to play in a team that is represented in Europe if possible. But the move to Leverkusen didn't work out and that's the end of the matter. But I feel very comfortable at VfB, I've been here for almost five years now. I want to help achieve our goals. The fact that I have stayed in Stuttgart is not a problem for me."

Sosa is a Croatia international, though he once turned down the nation in a bid to play for Germany, but he returned to the Croatian national team setup after learning that he was not eligible to play for Germany. He has since racked up 26 caps for Croatia.

The 27-year-old can play left-back and wing-back, and he is in need of regular football having made only 16 league appearances for Ajax since 2023. He made 19 league appearances while on loan with Torino last season. It’s unclear how much Palace will have to pay to sign Sosa, but Transfermarkt value him at £3.8million, which would be a cheap signing for a back-up left-back.
