Everton transfer involvement explained – Long-term planning the focus

Roma are maintaining contacts with Everton in case they need to involve them in their efforts to sign Brazilian defender Wesley.

That’s [according to Corriere dello Sport](https://www.corrieredellosport.it/news/calcio/calcio-mercato/roma/2025/07/05-141799866/la_roma_ha_fretta_per_wesley_gasp_spinge_la_strategia_di_massara), who explain how Everton’s involvement in the deal would make sense.

The newspaper explains that Roma are pushing hard to sign the full-back, who in an express wish for new manager Giampiero Gasperini.

Discussions between themselves and Flamengo are ongoing, with the Brazilian side demanding a €30m fee for their man. They are willing to discuss various payment methods, though, or even a loan with an obligation to buy or a deferred payment.

Flamengo are also talking to other suitors, such as Juventus, Manchester City and Everton. The latter are keen even without being involved in the deal for Roma.

The Italian side are keeping that dialogue open, though, in case there was resistance in the negotiations. That’s because Everton can more easily afford the €30m payment than Roma at this moment in time.

So, the idea is that they take on the hit this summer and then loan the defender to Roma for two years with an obligation to buy and a percentage of the profit on a future sale.

That would help Roma, who have to manage their finances carefully to comply with UEFA too, but also Everton. According to Corriere, they are aiming to return to Europe themselves next season and if they did, they would sell Wesley to Roma then. That would give them an immediate capital gain that would help their budget keep UEFA happy.

This is the idea that was presented in reports in Italy yesterday and now seem to be the one being widely accepted.

Whether it actually makes sense is up for debate, and Roma are working on other strategies for now, but it’s on the table and being discussed between the two Friedkin owned clubs.
