Winners and losers as Max Wober leaves Leeds United include £5m man and the 49ers - opinion

Max Wober has finally sealed his temporary exit from Leeds United, joining Werder Bremen on loan after a very mixed 2024/25 season in the Championship.

Max Wober, 27, managed just eight Championship appearances for Leeds United last season, splitting opinion in those appearances too.

It was widely expected that Wober would leave Elland Road this summer. It was recently claimed that Leeds United were selling Wober for £3.5million to Werder Bremen, but he’s joined the Bundesliga side on loan.

Whether he ever plays for the Whites again remains to be seen, if not highly unlikely. But Wober’s now sealed his temporary exit, and we look at the winners and the losers from the deal…

The winners from Max Wober’s loan move from Leeds United to Werder Bremen

Max Wober

Long before this summer, Wober knew he was leaving Leeds United this summer. But the fact that he’s left on loan may suggest that Farke either thinks Wober still has a future at the club, or that the Whites couldn’t get the financial package that they wanted for Wober this summer.

Either way, it’s a good move for Wober. He struggled with injuries last season, but even if he was fit throughout it might have been unlikely that he featured heavily. Now though, he’ll get some game time in a top flight European league, and if he impresses then he’ll put himself in a good position to settle down somewhere next summer.

Sebastiaan Bornauw

Sebastiaan Bornauw is the latest name to arrive at Elland Road. Leeds United completed a deal for Bornauw earlier this week and although Wober leaving was expected, it sees Bornauw automatically move up a place in the defensive pecking order.

But after Leeds completed a deal for Jaka Bijol, with Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk still solid options for Farke, it may be that Bornauw is still seen as a backup option next season. Nonetheless, he’ll get more game time opportunities with Wober out of the picture.

The 49ers

Leeds United signed Wober for around £12million from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023. It’s a big fee for a player who’s only made 24 total league appearances for the club, and even if he goes on to shine with Bremen, the chances of Leeds making back that £12million on Wober seem slim.

He’s under contract until 2027 and so next summer would present Leeds with the perfect chance, and perhaps the last chance to sell him and recoup at least some of what they invested in the Austrian.

But reports say that Leeds United only wanted £5million for Wober this summer and so it looks like the 49ers have already accepted a loss on the player.
