Leeds United 'monitoring' former Man Utd player who wants Premier League return

Leeds United are said to be monitoring Eric Bailly after the former Manchester United player became a free agent.

Bailly, 31, left Man United two years ago but last played a competitive match for them in December 2021. The central defender spent a season on loan at Marseille before signing for Besiktas.

His time in Istanbul was brief, though, as he had his contract terminated inside four months after being excluded from the squad. Bailly returned to Villarreal, from whom United signed him for £30million in 2016, making the Ivory Coast international their first arrival since appointing Jose Mourinho.

His two-year contract with the Spanish club expired this summer after making 25 appearances during his second spell. Bailly started the season in their team but fell out of favour last autumn and barely made it off the bench since returning from a muscle injury in December.

SportsBoom now reports that the player is eyeing a Premier League return with Everton. They cite sources stating that Bailly would welcome a return to the league.

Leeds are also said to be monitoring his next move. The Whites have, though, already signed two central defenders this summer.

Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw have bolstered their backline so far. Those additions join Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk as options in the heart of defence.

Leeds have, though, previously signed players who once represented Man United. Daniel James and Largie Ramazani spent time at Old Trafford before moving to South Yorkshire, the former even joining directly from them.

He played 74 times for Man United across three seasons, but is already up to 123 games in white. Ramazani, meanwhile, made just one competitive appearance in three years at the club. For comparison, Bailly made more appearances than both combined, with 113 over six years.
