Report: Giorgio Scalvini twist out of Italy as Newcastle United handed interesting update

Newcastle United have been informed about how Atalanta truly feel about selling talented young defender Giorgio Scalvini this summer.

Business has picked up on Tyneside after a worrying first month of the summer transfer window, with Eddie Howe now taking his efforts to improve his starting XI up a notch.

Newcastle United have been busy working on transfers over the past week and finally got a breakthrough with Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga after tabling a £55m bid for him. It now looks like Elanga will soon be a Newcastle player, with the 23-year-old keen on the move.

Now, Newcastle have turned their attention to Giorgio Scalvini. The defender was barely seen during the 2024/25 campaign due to two long-term injuries, but Howe and his recruitment team have seen enough to pursue a move.

Reports on Friday stated that Newcastle value Scalvini at £30m, but it is believed that they will need to pay much more to get Atalanta to budge. Scalvini has talked about his hopes of a Premier League move in the past; those dreams could now come true if the stars align.

However, reports in Italy have now shared an interesting update on Atalanta’s feelings towards selling the young defender, which could put the deal in jeopardy.

Atalanta see Newcastle United target Giorgio Scalvini as ‘unsellable’

Unfortunately, it is not the news that Newcastle staff or fans wanted to hear. Scalvini is destined for greatness, that is according to Gian Piero Gasperini, who gave the defender his debut aged 17.

It is clear that Atalanta are fully aware of what Scalvini can achieve and are not willing to let the defender go easily.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, Newcastle tried to contact Atalanta for Scalvini, but their approach did not change the Serie A side’s feelings towards the sale.

The Bergamo-based club consider the 21-year-old a key asset for the future, so nothing has advanced past the initial contact. The report adds that the Magpies’ interest is “real and concrete”, so it does not look like Howe will go down without a fight.

Newcastle still have a lot of time to go before the start of the season, but it has been made clear that Howe wants at least one new player ahead of pre-season. He is likely to get that in Elanga, but the signing of Scalvini would be a welcome bonus.

Newcastle United should not give up their efforts to sign Giorgio Scalvini

Injuries aside, there are very few players who have played at as high a level as Scalvini has in such a short space of time. The defender made his debut for the Italian national team at just 18 and has been a regular feature in Europe.

With a return to the Champions League on the horizon for Newcastle, signing someone like Scalvini is ideal for them. A young player who already has experience in Europe’s top competition, playing European giants like Barcelona in games with lots on the line.

A boost for Scalvini is that there is already an Italian at the club to help him settle in. Sandro Tonali will surely have no problem helping the youngster get to grips with life on Tyneside. The midfielder was in a similar position when he joined the club two years ago, though he did not have anyone from the same country as him for support.

While Atalanta are digging their heels in over a possible deal, that can only be a good sign for Newcastle. It shows how much Atalanta value him and what they believe he can achieve with them in the future.

A likely replacement for Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in the future, Scalvini should consider the move to Tyneside, where he can become a legend.
