Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle approach Atalanta over deal to sign Giorgio Scalvini

Another update has arrived on Newcastle United’s ongoing interest in Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini today.

After The Times reported yesterday that he was a top target of Eddie Howe’s and the Northern Echo added that talks were due to take place with Atalanta this weekend in a bid to push through a quick deal, Fabrizio Romano has just weighed in.

In a post on X just moments ago, Romano has confirmed that the 21-year-old Italian is ‘one of the main names’ on Newcastle’s summer shortlist, suggesting he is a key target along with Anthony Elanga (Forest) and James Trafford (Burnley).

He reports that we’ve made an initial approach in an attempt to land the Serie A centre-back, but insists it is ‘not an easy deal’ to do with reluctant sellers Atalanta, adding that several other clubs are also in the race to sign him.

Romano said: ‘Giorgio Scalvini, one of the main names on Newcastle shortlist for this summer. Understand there are also more clubs keen on Scalvini and involved in the race, not an easy deal with Atalanta but initial approaches took place.’

Discussing a potential move to the Premier League in 2023, the defender admitted it is the “best league there is” and a place he’d love to play at some stage in his career.

He said: “For me it’s the best league there is, for the intensity. Once in my career, I don’t even know when, I’d like to play there.”
