Dear Diary Entry 165

Tribute Planned To Goodison ‘Royalty’

Andy King….popular figure in his Molineux stay.

Monday, June 2: Terry Wharton isn’t the only former Wolves player having a book written about or with him. While he and Tim Nash rattle along in collaboration, we hear from Merseyside sources that a publication about the late Andy King is also on the way. The long-time midfielder was a big favourite across two spells at Everton before moving to Molineux in 1985.

Sunday, June 15: To say this was a triumph made in Wolverhampton would be a step too far but Portugal’s winning of the UEFA Nations League tonight had strong shades of gold and black. On the pitch and in their victorious line-up against Spain in Munich were Ruben Neves, Pedro Neto, Nelson Semedo, Vitinha and Diogo Jota, with Trincao and Jose Sa as unused substitutes. How lucky we are to have had such riches in our midst for the best part of a decade.

Monday, June 16: It’s impossible to imagine Robbie Keane not having enjoyed the limelight in the UK again after leading clubs to title triumphs in Israel and Hungary in the last year and a bit. The man in charge of Ferencvaros’s latest domestic glory was a runaway double champion at Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2024 and was at Old Trafford yesterday as one of the coaches at the annual Soccer Aid charity fund-raiser.

Monday, June 23: ‘Wow’ – the reaction of Pep Guardiola after Rayan Ait-Nouri made a fine debut for Manchester City against Al Ain in the Club World Cup in Atlanta. City reached the knockout stage of the competition with their thumping 6-0 victory but has the Algerian – brilliant going forward and sometimes suspect defensively – solved their problem left-back position? Surprisingly lining up at right-back for the deposed League champions was another former Wolves man, Matheus Nunes.

Tuesday, June 24: Well, he was enjoying his break – we know that because he told us in the spring that he had been to Antigua and relished his extended leisure time – but Rob Edwards is back in football. The former Wolves coach and defender was today unveiled as the new head coach Midlesbrough, who parted company with Michael Carrick after failing to reach the Championship play-offs.

Friday, June 27: Yet another former Wolves player steps up in a no 1 role….Keith Andrews has been named as head coach of Brentford in succession to new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank. It’s quite a promotion for the West London club’s set-piece coach, who is sitting on a three-year contract in the countdown to the Premier League kick-off. Andrews, developed from his early teens at Compton, has also coached at MK Dons, Sheffield United and with the Republic of Ireland. We wish him well.

Ruben Neves….as drawn by the brilliant Louise Cobbold.

Saturday, June 28: Spotted a familiar face among the celebrating throng after England won the Under-21 European Championship in Bratislava tonight….that of former Wolves doctor Matt Perry. He was visible once or twice in the dug-out at the under-21 final, having joined the FA three years ago after well over 20 seasons at Molineux. Another Wolves link was provided by Conor Coady, who was in the Channel 4 studio on pundit duty.

Friday, July 4: Crushingly moving photos and film from Portugal and other parts of the world as fans, players and officials continue to pay respect to Diogo Jota the day before his funeral in Gondomar, near Porto. Not too many words are needed here, especially not in connection to the heartfelt sentiments of the Liverpool striker’s Wolves and international team-mate.
