As Liverpool's players gathered to bid a final farewell to their teammate Diogo Jota at his funeral in Portugal, goalkeeper Alisson Becker was unable to attend the ceremony to pay his respects.

The Brazilian took to Instagram to pay a heartfelt tribute to the late Liverpool forward, who tragically lost his life alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain, just a fortnight after his wedding.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Alisson wrote: "Usually, I post things that make sense, but today, nothing makes sense! Once again, an ocean separates me from "saying goodbye" to someone I love!

"But I know that I am well represented by my club mates! To you, my friend @rutecfcardoso14, just know that you will never walk alone, we will be with you as soon as possible!"

He continued: "In a moment like this, all we can do is bow down before the Sovereignty of God, and receive grace and help in this time! I'll remember Diogo as a great friend, father and husband!"

Alisson followed up his message to Jota and his family with a poignant bible passage.

The football world has been in mourning since Jota's passing, with numerous Liverpool players and fellow professionals paying tribute to the 28-year-old.

A small group of Reds players, including Liverpool manager Arne Slot, attended a private funeral ceremony this weekend in Gondomar, near Porto, where Jota grew up.

Liverpool stars including Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa, Joe Gomez and Ryan Gravenberch have all been spotted in Portugal attending the funeral.

They were joined by former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Tiago Alcantara. On Friday, Henderson also honoured Jota by leaving a heartfelt message in the book of condolence at Anfield.

Liverpool's star forward Mohamed Salah shared his grief on social media, stating it would be "extremely difficult" to return for pre-season knowing that Jota won't be there, reports Liverpool.com.

"I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break," Salah posted on social media.

"Team-mates come and go but not like this.

"It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back. My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children.
