Nwaneri contract: Shock twist sees PL giants intensify pursuit

Arsenal are under increasing pressure to resolve Ethan Nwaneri’s contract situation, with Chelsea monitoring developments closely should negotiations collapse.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has yet to agree terms on a long-term extension despite turning professional last year. Talks are ongoing, but progress has been slow.

Arsenal were only permitted to offer an extended deal after Nwaneri turned 18 in March, due to FA regulations that limit underage contracts to a maximum of three years.

While both parties remain engaged, the delay has alerted rival clubs. Chelsea, in particular, are understood to be keeping a close watch and are prepared to make a move if an agreement with Arsenal falls through.

According to Fabrizio Romano, their interest is contingent on the Gunners failing to secure Nwaneri’s signature.

Arsenal remain hopeful. Sources close to the club believe Nwaneri wants to stay. He grew up a supporter, joined the club at age eight and has progressed through the Hale End academy.

His breakout 2024/25 campaign saw him make 37 senior appearances, score nine goals and win the Under-21 European Championship with England.

However, concerns persist in his camp over playing time. Despite a strong season, Nwaneri featured for much fewer minutes in Arsenal’s final eight games following Bukayo Saka’s return.

His representatives are now seeking assurances about his development pathway and role in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Arsenal’s pursuit of high-profile attackers this summer has only intensified those concerns. The Gunners are actively targeting multiple offensive reinforcements, including Eberechi Eze, Rodrygo, and Noni Madueke.

A deal for Crystal Palace’s Eze is under consideration, and Chelsea’s willingness to offload Madueke could open up further competition for minutes in Nwaneri’s favoured areas.

Chelsea’s interest aligns with their aggressive youth strategy, which has seen them sign some of Europe’s brightest prospects. A move for Nwaneri could cost upwards of €80 million, but his age and potential make him a coveted long-term investment.

Despite the external interest, Arsenal remain committed to keeping him. Director Andrea Berta and head of football operations James King are leading negotiations, with confidence growing that a resolution can be found.

Until a deal is sealed, uncertainty lingers — and so does Chelsea’s interest. Arsenal must now act decisively to ensure one of their brightest academy graduates remains in red and white.
