Seven-year NFL veteran Bryan Braman is fighting for his life against a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
According to a report from KPRC2, Braman's longtime agent Sean Stellato described the ordeal as "extremely serious." The 38-year-old ex-linebacker has reportedly had "multiple" surgeries and continues to get treatment in Seattle.
Stellato's agency made a statement in support of Braman, who played for both the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles.
"At Stellato Sports, Bryan Braman has always stood for strength, resilience and leadership," Stellato told KPRC 2. "He is a pillar and a staple of the underdog. Now, in the face of cancer, he embodies those qualities more than ever. If there is one person that I know that can beat cancer, it is Bryan Braman, who I have always considered family. He's in the fight of his life. Please support Bryan and keep him in your prayers."
Several of Braman's former teammates donated to the GoFundMe page set up to help with his treatment. Texans icon JJ Watt was the top donor at $10,000. As of Saturday morning, the initiative has more than doubled its initial goal of $25,000.
The GoFundMe page also included more details on Braman's medical battle.
"With the cancer that Bryan has, which is a VERY rare form of cancer, the Car-t treatment had the highest chance of success as the cells are reprogrammed to fight this cancer that is within Bryan," read an update from June 21. "His cells did re-infuse themselves, and did in fact start reproducing within his bone marrow. At first the mass did start to shrink, but then the cancer started fighting back. At this point Bryan has had to start having chemo treatments that are designed for the treatment program Bryan is in."
The Spokane, Washington, native went undrafted in 2011 but was able to make the Texans' 53-man roster. The West Texas A&M alum turned into a fan favorite on Houston's special teams unit as a rookie.
Braman spent his first three seasons with the Texans before signing a two-year, $3.15 million contract with the Eagles in 2014. He closed out his career in Philadelphia, with the team's Super Bowl win in February 2018 marking his last NFL game.
