Two-way guard reportedly on Lakers’ radar to bolster backcourt defense

After recovering from an ACL injury and ending the season with the Brooklyn Nets, De’Anthony Melton is a hot free agent target. The Lakers, Bucks, Suns, and Clippers are reportedly interested in his two-way skills and defensive prowess.

De’Anthony Melton is officially on the market after finishing the 2024–25 season with the Brooklyn Nets. He now enters NBA free agency, aiming to find the right fit for the next chapter of his career.

Melton, 27, actually began the 2024–25 season with the Golden State Warriors. In six games with them—two of which he started—he averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. However, his campaign was cut short after he suffered a torn ACL during a win over the Dallas Mavericks (120–117). That injury sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Following the injury, Golden State traded Melton to the Brooklyn Nets in December 2024 as part of the deal that brought Dennis Schroder to the Warriors.

Now, as a free agent, Melton is drawing interest from multiple contenders. According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Phoenix Suns are all lining up as potential suitors.

Melton is regarded as a strong two-way guard, capable of making an impact on both ends of the floor. He can knock down shots, create plays offensively, and apply consistent defensive pressure. These qualities make him a valuable asset, especially for teams looking to upgrade their perimeter defense.

Among the teams interested, the Lakers appear to be a particularly strong fit. With several offensive-minded guards on their roster, Melton’s defensive presence could fill a key gap in their rotation. His ability to balance both ends of the floor could make the Lakers a much tougher team to play against in the upcoming season.
