For Derik Queen, the start of NBA Summer League provides a chance to quiet the screaming that his new team overspent on him. For four other Maryland basketball alums, it's a chance to show they deserve a shot to play under the bright lights.
The first Summer League game, tonight at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN, features the Philadelphia 76ers nd the Utah Jazz, which recently signed former Terps sharpshooter Selton Miguek to an undrafted free agent deal. Later this month, former frontcourt mates Queen (New Orleans Pelicans) and Julian Reese (L.A. Lakers) will face off.
Miguel, Queen, Reese, Donta Scott (Warriors), and Jahmir Young (Bulls) will all be chasing their NBA dreams. Queen, the headliner of the group, was taken 13th overall by Atlanta and dealt to New Orleans on draft night, a move that's been the most questioned move of the draft because of what they gave up to get the big man from Baltimore. Miguel and Reese signed undrafted free-agent deals with their teams and are hoping for a longer look. Scott returns after a season in the G League with Santa Cruz.
Young has the best chance among the four undrafted Terps to solidify a roster spot. He was named to the All-G League Rookie Team last season. In 30 regular-season G League games—17 with the Grand Rapids Gold (Denver Nuggets affiliate) and 13 with the Windy City Bulls (Chicago Bulls affiliate)—Young averaged 21.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 45.6% from the field, 30.4% from three and 86.1% from the free-throw line. In 13 Tip-Off Tournament games for the Gold, he averaged 22.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 6.8 assists. He made his NBA debut on March 4 and played six games with the Bulls, averaging 1.8 points, 0.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 5.0 minutes per game on 4-for-5 shooting.
Reese and Queen's teams will meet July 12 in Las Vegas, when the Lakers take on the Pelicans.
Miguel gets started first in the Salt Lake City Summer League, where the Jazz play July 5, 7 and 8. He'll have to work to get into the floor on a Jzz Summer League roster that features highly regarded young players like No. 5 overall pick Ace Bailey (Rutgers), Florida star Walter Clayton Jr., Isaiah Collier and Cody Williams, last year's No. 10 overall pick. Reese and Scott begin the same day at the California Classic, where the Lakers and Warriors both play multiple times between July 5–8.
All five will then head to Las Vegas for the NBA 2K26 Summer League, which runs July 10‑20. Queen debuts with the Pelicans on July 10 at 3:30 p.m. ET, while Reese and the Lakers face the Mavericks later that night. Young, Scott, and Miguel are also on full Summer League schedules.
