The football world is in mourning after Diogo Jota passes away

Everton were quick to pass on their condolences on social media after the news broke of Jota’s death.

Indeed, the entire football world is in mourning after this tragedy.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Tributes for Jota have come from near and far, and will likely continue to do so in the following days.

Jota was a feared opponent of Everton in the Merseyside derby, but this obviously hasn’t stopped those representing the Toffees from paying their respects.

The funeral of the brothers took place on Saturday (5 July) in Portugal, with most of Jota’s Liverpool teammates attending.

The Portuguese international scored his last Liverpool goal against Everton in April. He was on his way to Santander to catch a ferry back to Liverpool when the accident happened. He was 28 years old.

Both halves of Liverpool unite to mourn Jota’s death

The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool is one of the most passionate in English football.

The two clubs are separated by just one mile, and their history is deeply intertwined.

Matches are fiercely contested, with pride and bragging rights among fans always at stake.

Both sets of fans pour their heart and soul into supporting their clubs, always creating an electric atmosphere on derby day.

At the same time, the bitterness of this rivalry often coexists with surprising moments of unity.

It’s not common to find families split down the middle – one half red, the other blue – watching the match together.

During national tragedies, fans from both clubs have come together to show solidarity, and Jota’s passing is another example of this.

This is a reminder that some things are more important than football rivalries.

More moving tributes are likely to be seen throughout the city of Liverpool in the coming days.

The next Merseyside derby will take place at Anfield on 20 September, when both sets of fans will no doubt unite in paying further respects to Jota.
