Bayern player ratings v PSG: Two players score a 7 as 4/10 star caught out in spectacle

FC Bayern had initially struggled to gain a foothold in what was a very tense first half of action in Atlanta.

A moment of ingenuity from Kingsley Coman, however, appeared to tip the scales back in favour of Vincent Kompany’s men. Harry Kane came close to finding an opener from the Frenchman’s cross, but his resulting header flew over the bar.

Despite suffering the heartbreak of Jamal Musiala’s horror injury late in the first half, the Bundesliga champions were aggressive going into the second.

Bayern placed plenty of pressure on their Ligue 1 opponents but it was a moment of carelessness that undid their hard work.

Harry Kane was caught in possession inside his own half, inspiring a PSG counter that found Désire Doué with space outside the 18-yard box to break the deadlock.

What a quarter-final! PSG against Bayern Munich. At the end, Luis Enrique’s PSG won 2-0.

It has to be said that it was a really, really close match between the two European heavyweights at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Goals from Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé decided the tie in favour of the French outfit.

It’s a hard result for Bayern Munich to take home with them after such a closely fought contest with the reigning Champions League holders.

In the end, also, we have to contemplate the big tragedy that was Jamal Musiala’s injury. He’s now in the hospital after Donnarumma unintentionally fell on his leg.

It doesn’t look good for Jamal.

Bayern player ratings

The first XI

Manuel Neuer (7) – Got away with one careless pass to Kvaratskhelia in the second half but was otherwise important in goal. Superb saves in both halves; firstly from the Georgian winger (after Upamecano was beaten) in the first half, and secondly in a one-on-one with Barcola early in the second.

Josip Stanišić (5) – Didn’t have much of a say on proceedings prior to his injury-enforced substitution in the 34th minute.

Jonathan Tah (5.5) – Tah completed 3/4 duels (ground and aerial) contested against PSG, but looked the least impressive of Bayern’s centre-backs.

Dayot Upamecano (7) – Kvaratskhelia gave Upamecano plenty to think about, but the Frenchman was otherwise Bayern’s strongest defender on the pitch against PSG.

Konrad Laimer (6) – Couldn’t assert himself on the pitch. A game in which the right-back was outshone by his PSG counterpart, Hakimi.

Aleksandar Pavlović (4) – More involved in proceedings than his midfield partner. Almost helped break the deadlock with a sensational lofted ball to Musiala in the box. However, the 21-year-old did not look good against Doué for the first goal.

Joshua Kimmich (5) – Very quiet game from Bayern Munich’s midfield enforcer. Only won one of his four ground duels attempted and was swept up by the tense nature of the occasion.

Kingsley Coman (6) – Came alive after the half-hour mark with some superb dribbling to create space down the left flank. Almost created the game’s opener with a quality cross to Harry Kane in the box in the first half.

Michael Olise (6.5) – Provided arguably the first bit of serious quality in the game with a strong drive into space on the right flank before forcing a good save from Donnarumma in the first half.

Jamal Musiala (6.5) – Game ended prematurely following a brutal coming together with Donnarumma at the end of the first 45. Had arguably been Bayern’s most dangerous player prior to that point.

Harry Kane (5) – Put himself in some great goalscoring positions but just couldn’t find the breakthrough for FC Bayern. Found Coman in space running toward the goal with a stellar pass and was unfortunately offside after appearing to score the equaliser. At fault for PSG’s opening goal after losing the ball in midfield.

Substitutions

Sacha Boey (5) – Came on for an injured Stanisic in the first half. Was Bayern’s best fullback in the Club World Cup encounter. Defensively astute and offered some attacking threat.

Serge Gnabry (5.5) – Bayern missed Jamal Musiala’s creativity after Gnabry’s arrival. The 29-year-old didn’t have much of an impact on the game following his arrival on the pitch.

Leon Goretzka (5) – Very limited involvement in the game.

Thomas Müller (5) – Thomas Muller’s final game in the FC Bayern shirt. Couldn’t make a decisive impact but came close to winning the Bavarians a penalty deep into extra time.

Raphaël Guerreiro (N/A) – Came on too late to influence the game.
