Surprising detail in Lakers center contract

Jaxson Hayes has re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on a one-year deal that includes a rare no-trade clause.

Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes will be returning to the team. As Shams Charania of ESPN first reported, Hayes has signed a new one-year deal with the California-based franchise.

His contract, though, includes an unusual detail: a no-trade clause. According to Trevon Lane, this means the Lakers cannot trade Hayes before the February 2026 trade deadline unless he agrees to waive the clause.

Last season, only LeBron James, Hayes' Lakers teammate, and Phoenix Suns star guard Bradley Beal had no-trade clauses. Moritz Wagner, who recently re-signed with the Orlando Magic, reportedly has one as well.

Hayes, 25, is coming off a season in which he averaged 6.8 points and 4.8 rebounds over 56 games, including 35 starts. His role grew after the LA Lakers traded Anthony Davis to Dallas in early February.

However, Hayes struggled in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. In the first-round series against the towering Minnesota Timberwolves, he averaged just 7.8 minutes and 1.8 points per game, finishing the series with a -17 plus/minus.

With Hayes largely ineffective, the Lakers were forced to rely heavily on small-ball lineups throughout the series.

A six-year NBA veteran, Hayes began his career in New Orleans.

To address the lack of size and presence in the center position, the Lakers have already signed former No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton.
