Jesse Marsch was shown the exit door at Leeds United in March 2023 after a difficult time in charge of the Yorkshire club. The American coach then had just over a year out of the game before being given the opportunity to manage Canada.
As a cost host of the 2026 World Cup, Canada have automatically qualified for the tournament and will hope to have their best performance of the current generation. They have some star players at their disposal who can help them do that and the standout name is Jonathan David.
The 25-year-old has just signed for Juventus, having left Lille as a free agent. It was a surprise more clubs were involved in the fight for the attacker, given he scored 25 goals and contributed 12 assists last season.
[Gazzetta dello Sport](http://gazzetta.it) have taken the transfer as an opportunity to speak to Jesse Marsch, and Leeds United came into his thoughts when he was asked about David.
The Italian newspaper quote him as saying: _“David is a 9, but also a 9 and a half, a 10 or an outside striker. With us, in Canada, he plays as a second striker or as a 10 with a centre forward nearby. And he scores a lot of goals just the same. When I was coaching Leeds, I would have wanted David with me in the Premier League. But now, coaching him in the national team, I have realised that he is stronger than I imagined.”_
Leeds United were linked to David before, during and after Marsch’s time in charge at Elland Road, although never looked close to a transfer.
