Gabriel Gudmundsson has emerged as a major transfer priority for Leeds United in recent weeks.

Junior Firpo’s departure has severely dented the Whites’ early aspirations for next season, and it is imperative that they replace him with a player of similar quality.

The 28-year-old’s exit has seen the left-back spot become a source of plenty of discussion at Elland Road this summer, and it now looks as if Daniel Farke is about to get his replacement for the outgoing star.

Gudmundsson has been outlined as a potential arrival recently, and now significant progress has been made towards a deal to sign the Swede.

Gudmundsson may land in Leeds today

Leeds are believed to be close to agreeing a deal to sign Gudmundsson, with talks ongoing between the Whites and Lille.

The West Yorkshire outfit have been tight-lipped on the 26-year-old, but Graham Smyth has revealed that he could land in England today (6 July).

It is possible that Gudmundsson could be on a private jet which is due to land in Leeds at 11:02am on Sunday (6 July). The flight will depart from Lille, and will then continue onwards to the Norwegian capital of Oslo after its stop in Leeds.

With Gudmundsson’s arrival expected to be imminent, it surely makes sense for the full-back to be one of the passengers on board the flight.

The plane’s continuation to Oslo later in the day suggests the possibility that there could be some sort of additional Scandinavian involvement in the deal (given its close proximity to Gudmundsson’s homeland). This would likely relate to Gudmundsson’s agent, given that he is represented by MD Management, who are Scandinavia’s leading football agency.

Gudmundsson would be a great signing for Leeds

Farke and Co. will have known for months now that they face a hugely difficult task in replacing Firpo.

However, Gudmundsson possesses the level of experience that will be vital for any addition that Leeds do make to the left side of their backline.

The Swedish international has spent the last four seasons at Lille, and has gained plenty of experience in Ligue 1, as well as having enjoyed stints in both the Champions League and Conference League.

He perhaps wouldn’t bring the same level of creative output that Firpo provided, but given his pedigree, there can be no doubt that he would be a strong addition to the fold if the Whites can get the deal over the line.
