The long-awaited transfer of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad was made official by Arsenal today, and the Spanish international is keen to get going at his new club.
The 26 year old was unveiled as a Gunner today, but it’s a move that has been in the pipeline for some time. Earlier this year solid reporting linked the midfielder with a switch from San Sebastian to London, and despite some reported interest from Real Madrid, this is a transfer which was never in doubt, with everything agreed between the two clubs as far back as March.
Speaking to the official site, Zubimendi spoke about his desire to embrace the new challenge and be part of an Arsenal team which enjoy success in the Premier League and beyond.
“Well, it’s a very important moment in my career,” he said.
“The step I was looking for, that I wanted to take. It’s true that it’s already been 15 years in my previous team, in Real Sociedad, and obviously it’s a huge change, but I’m looking forward to it.
“Once I took the decision to change, I focused on Arsenal.
“I think that in sporting terms, I fit in very well with the style. It’s a young team, with a lot of passion and ambition. They’ve been showing it in recent years, and I think the next few years will be the best.
“I want to contribute as much as I can from the pitch. I want to be competitive and help the team with all my qualities. As a team, it’s clear that trophies often determine the season.
“So, I think winning these trophies is a good goal.”
Like boss Mikel Arteta, Zubimendi comes from San Sebastian, and that connection was a key part of the deal going through.
The Arsenal boss welcomed his new midfield lynchpin, saying, “Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.
“The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.”
