Newcastle United bowed out of the race for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, allowing Manchester United to advance in talks.
The 25-year-old was high up on Eddie Howe’s list of transfer targets this summer, but he was quickly sent back down to earth when it was revealed that Bryan Mbeumo had ridiculous demands to join Newcastle United.
Reports suggest that Mbeumo wanted £250,000-a-week to join Newcastle, a wage that would have seen him become the club’s highest earner by a big margin.
Newcastle have turned their attention to Anthony Elanga, and are believed to be close to agreeing a deal with Nottingham Forest for him. Reports on Friday stated that Forest were happy with Newcastle’s up-front offer for Elanga, and it is now just a case of ironing out the personal terms before the deal goes through.
In the meantime, Manchester United are set to make a third bid for Mbeumo, believed to be around the £63m that Brentford are looking for. The deal would see one of the best Premier League wingers join Ruben Amorim’s side alongside the likes of former Newcastle target Matheus Cunha.
While Man U look to seal the deal for Mbeumo, a new report has stated that the Red Devils are now shockingly linked with another Newcastle target who they nearly signed in 2024.

Man United exploring a deal to sign Newcastle United target Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Last week, Dominic Calvert-Lewin announced his departure from Everton after nine years at the club. The 28-year-old has struggled for form over the last couple of seasons as the Toffees had to deal with problems off the pitch and managerial changes.
Newcastle are interested in signing Calvert-Lewin as a backup to Alexander Isak. The Magpies look like they have lost Callum Wilson after his contract expired, so they are now seeking alternatives.

However, it was revealed that Calvert-Lewin has interest from the Bundesliga but is still assessing his options.
Now, according to SunSport, Man United have now entered the race for the England international. The report states that insiders at the North West club have reached out to Calvert-Lewin over the possibility of joining them next season. The Red Devils already have several strikers on their books, so it is unknown where he would rank in the pecking order.
With aspirations of a long contract and big wage demands, Calvert-Lewin will surely want to be the first or second choice at whichever club he joins. That may not be the case at Man United.
Newcastle United need to look for other options after Dominic Calvert-Lewin update
It is believed that Calvert-Lewin has interest from over a dozen clubs this summer. He is still clearly a hot free agent despite his lack of form over the last two seasons.
Newcastle also missed out on Jonathan David to Juventus, a blow for the Magpies who had scouted him extensively over the last few months.
Of course, Howe could look to Newcastle’s academy to promote a promising young player like Sean Neave, but with Champions League on the horizon, it is clear that the Magpies need proven quality to stand a chance of being competitive.
There is still a long way to go in the transfer window, and there has yet to be a concrete link for a striker, despite there being players identified for the three other positions that Howe wanted to improve this summer.
Calvert-Lewin looks like he will end up elsewhere, leaving fans wondering who their next signing at striker will be.
