Newcastle United continue to strengthen their academy.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news last week that the Magpies had beaten several Premier League clubs to the 16-year-old’s signature.
Hutchison, who can play as a striker or on the wing, only joined Rangers from Hearts in 2024 but quickly caught the eye of Newcastle and other top-flight clubs.
Romano wrote on X: “Newcastle complete deal to sign talent Alfie Hutchison from Rangers, agreement in place. NUFC beat several Premier League clubs to secure the 16-year-old striker for the academy.”
Alfie Hutchinson’s move to Newcastle United made official
It wasn’t clear when Hutchinson would officially join Newcastle. But as per Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph, the teenager’s move was made official last Monday (July 1).
“Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Rangers forward Alfie Hutchison,” Joseph said. “It’s understood the 16-year-old has completed a medical with #NUFC and agreed terms on a long-term contract. The Scotland youth international will officially join the club on July 1.”
Hutchinson played for the Gers’ under-19s team last season, scoring twice on his Glasgow Cup debut against Queen Park’s.
Speaking after the game, Hutchinson said: “It’s a really good [feeling]. It was my debut in the tournament, so it was really good to start off with two goals.
“The first one has just fell to me inside the six-yard box and it was about just my touch, turn and finishing on target. I can play both through the middle and off the sides, both as well as each other.”
Newcastle United’s double Rangers swoop
Oliver Goodbrand is also set to join Newcastle from Rangers after first undergoing a medical last month.
Newcastle’s interest in Goodbrand first emerged in April when the Daily Record claimed an agreement was close. He is highly-rated by the Gers, who were prepared to offer him professional terms.
Newcastle United academy & PSR
Since the takeover in October 2021, youth investment has been prioritised as the club aims to combat Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) pressures.
Developing players for Eddie Howe’s first team is cost-effective and was a strategy previously neglected by Mike Ashley. Even if youngsters fail to make the cut, they can be sold and provide pure profit to the PSR balance sheet.
