Kristjaan Speakman's 'progressive club' comment as Sunderland transfer is confirmed

Aouchiche, who is contracted to the [Black Cats](http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/football/sunderland) to the summer of 2028, will spend next season at Pittodrie playing for an Aberdeen side that will compete in the league phase of the Europa League thanks to their victory in last season’s Scottish Cup final.

The terms of the loan deal are understood to include an option that would enable Aberdeen to complete a permanent transfer next summer.

Aouchiche has made 38 appearances for Sunderland in all competitions since moving to the Stadium of Light in September 2023, scoring two goals and claiming four assists.

Formerly of Paris Saint-Germain, Saint Etienne and Lorient, the 22-year-old spent the second part of last season on loan at Portsmouth, featuring on 12 occasions.

“Adil expressed a desire to play regularly in January, and we achieved this outcome during his time on loan at Portsmouth,” said Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. “This move to Aberdeen will enable him to continue playing games regularly at a progressive club, who also have a European games programme.

“At 22, he has significant experience and we believe this move to be a great next step for him. We wish him well and look forward to supporting him throughout the upcoming season.”

Aouchiche is likely to be the first of a number of fringe players who leave Sunderland this summer, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Pierre Ekwah, Abdoullah Ba, Nazariy Rusyn and Luis Hemir are all back in the Black Cats fold, but do not have a future on Wearside under Regis Le Bris. It remains to be seen whether any of the quartet will feature in next weekend's opening friendly double-header against Gateshead and South Shields.

Nectar Triantis has had two loan spells in the Scottish top-flight with Hibernian, with the Edinburgh club keen to sign the Australian on a permanent basis this summer.

With Europa League qualifiers to come before the end of the month, Hibs boss David Gray is pushing the Sunderland hierarchy to make a decision over what they want to do with Triantis, who has also been linked with a possible move to the MLS.

“It's always going to be something that's never going to happen overnight just purely because of how well he's (Gray) done," said Gray. "He's going to attract a lot of interest.

“His parent club have just been promoted to the Premier League so they're going through a bit of a transition as to what their plan is going to be moving forward.

“For us, he's a big part of what we've done last season. When fit, he played nearly every minute of every game. He was a huge player for us last season.

“It's a position we know we need to look at, that defensive-minded player. The conversations and the hard work is going on to see what we can do in that position.”
