Over a month has ticked by since Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo expressed his wish to don the Manchester United kit this summer. The Red Devils have lobbed in two offers, one for £55million and another for £62.5m, but neither hit the mark with Brentford's asking price, and there's been no whisper of a third bid.

United were tipped to come back with another offer after their second knock-back, having put forward £55m plus an extra £7.5m in add-ons. They reportedly set a deadline for the end of the week to seal the deal, as Ruben Amorim's lads are due back at Carrington for pre-season training on Monday.

But fans have been left hanging with no updates on the transfer, and now there's chatter about another striker potentially heading to Old Trafford.

United are rumoured to be eyeing up a surprise swoop for ex-Everton frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin following the end of his contract on July 1. The Old Trafford bigwigs reckon Calvert-Lewin has got something that Amorim's current strike force is missing, reports the Express.

Sources claim that they could tempt the 28 year old free agent with a hefty contract, sweetened with appearance bonuses, to bring him to Manchester. United have already missed the boat on two top-notch strikers this summer after failing to secure a spot in European football last season.

The increasing chatter about a possible swoop for Calvert-Lewin suggests that the Old Trafford bosses might be reshuffling their transfer targets yet again. Chief executive Omar Berrada has been steadfast in his resolve to curb United's tendency to splash out on transfers.

However, after two unsuccessful attempts to land Mbeumo, and a third likely to demand over £15m upfront – more than the initial offer – this saga is veering into familiar territory. United are still hotly tipped to secure a deal for the 25 year old striker to team him up with Matheus Cunha in a revamped frontline.

Amorim won't be able to bring in any more signings without offloading players first, as the 20-time English champions look to shed surplus squad members. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have all postponed their pre-season returns while they hunt for new clubs.
