Potential Celtics big man option signs with Grizzlies (report)

When the Rockets waived big man Jock Landale, it added another center option in free agency. Considering the Celtics are thin at that spot, it meant at least another possibility on the open market. Instead, Landale signed with the Grizzlies who shuffled around their big men, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Memphis not only landed Landale, but it also traded center Jay Huff to the Pacers in a separate deal for draft assets. So those are a pair of big men who saw some movement over the weekend. It appeared the C’s could have been an option for Landale considering the team could offer playing time, but he goes to the Grizzlies instead.

The Celtics are thin in their front court, losing Luke Kornet to the Spurs while Al Horford is rumored to be headed elsewhere this offseason. While the C’s added Luka Garza in free agency, the big man spot continues to be the major question mark on the roster. Only Neemias Queta and Xavier Tillman are currently under contract, along with Garza.

There aren’t that many free agent big options at this point in the offseason. The Celtics will likely continue making deals as they tweak their roster, plus they’re slightly above the second apron after making some minor signings.

Boston shed significant payroll this summer when it moved Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis in separate deals. But between all the moves, the Celtics are now thin in the front-court as they’re looking at a retooling next season. Expect the C’s to remain active as they’re likely not done with shaping their roster.
