The Buffalo Bills will go as far as Josh Allen takes them. That much is evident for the league MVP and the roster around him.
But while Allen's standing as Buffalo's franchise quarterback is unchallenged, who will be his backup is a bigger question.
As it happens, on paper? The Bills have a Pro Bowl quarterback as Allen's backup.
That would be Mitchell Trubisky.
So, what's the setup?
The former Chicago Bears starting quarterback will compete for a roster spot at this training camp with Mike White. While Trubisky certainly had more experience as a starting quarterback, White has had moments of being a serviceable starter in his own right.
It's why Bills' general manager Brandon Beane has clarified that the team won't simply give Trubisky the backup job with a recent announcement.
Said the GM: "We don't lock a lot of spots in here. Obviously, we know No. 17 is locked in, but every year, you pretty much have to come in and earn your job. I know Mitch knows that. He doesn't expect any different."
Trubisky appeared in nine games last year with a completion number of over 73 percent with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He has been a quality backup quarterback since his time with the Bears ended.
White, meanwhile, is 2-5 as a spot starter, with a 61-percent completion total, plus nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
As things stand, is it safe to assume that Trubisky will be Allen's immediate backup? Some may think way, but Buffalo is telling both Trubisky and White to think of it another way altogether.
