‘Hearts are broken’: Hunt family grieving after devastating Texas flood tragedy

The Hunt family is grieving after the devastating flooding tragedy in Texas.

The death toll stands at 70 from massive rains in central Texas that led to catastrophic July 4 flooding of the Guadalupe River — and the losses includes 9-year-old Janie Hunt.

The young girl was the great-granddaughter of the late oil billionaire William Herbert Hunt, who was the brother of the late Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt. Lamar Hunt’s son, Clark, is the NFL franchise’s chairman and CEO.

Janie Hunt was attending Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp along the river. Heavy rains struck before dawn on Friday — the July 4 holiday — and overflowed the river, which rose 26 feet in about 45 minutes.

At least 11 girls and a camp counselor are among the victims. Many are still missing, with a large-scale rescue and recovery operation underway.

Margaret Hunt, Janie’s grandmother, said Janie died in the flash flooding. Janie was attending the camp for the first time.

Tavia Hunt, Clark Hunt’s wife, shared on social media that the family, like many others, is grieving.

“Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives — including a precious little Hunt cousin, along with several friend’s little girls,” Tavia Hunt said.

“If your heart is broken, I assure you God is near. He is gentle with your wounds. And He is still worthy—even when your soul is struggling to believe it. Trust doesn’t mean you’re over the pain; it means you’re handing it to the only One who can hold it with love and restore what was lost. For we do not grieve as those without hope.”
