Everton are making steady progress in the transfer window amid talk of substantial spending on Merseyside.

Carlos Alcaraz has already turned his Everton stay into a permanent one, having spent the second half of last season on loan from Flamengo.

Everton are also closing in on a deal to sign Villareal striker Thierno Barry for a reported £27.5million.

However, the most significant business they have done is securing Jarrad Branthwaite to a new five-year deal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton make positive statement with Branthwaite announcement

Tottenham were the most interested party in Branthwaite, who eventually tied down his long-term future to Everton.

The 23-year-old has emerged as a generational talent since his move to the North West, hence the interest in his services.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – has weighed in on the deal.

“That’s a really positive move by Everton to tie him down,” he said.

“We’ve always talked about him as one of the assets that you could look to cash in on, and of course, that may or may not have been more desperate in recent years and times gone by.

“That’s not the case at the moment.

“They’ve still got to be a little bit careful, but he was one of those that we’ve always looked at and said, if they can hang on to him, that’d be a really good piece of business in its own right, and that is the case here.

“I think that’s a really positive statement from the club, and obviously positive for the fans as well, that actually you can now look again to build a team into the future.

“Okay, you’re going to have some leave, and Calvert-Lewin’s an example on the other side of that, but it is a marker to put down for the club there that they’re trying to keep hold of the better players and grow around them.”

Toffees in win-win scenario with Branthwaite

Everybody knows that just because a player signs a new deal, it does not mean they will see out their contract.

With Branthwaite, he is such a talented player that big clubs are likely to come in for him in the future.

However, the difference is that Everton can now demand an even bigger fee for the centre-back if he were to leave, protecting them from vultures in the market.

Now, Branthwaite can focus on building his Everton legacy and forcing a way into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of a huge World Cup.
