Mohammed Kudus has emerged as a top target for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Sky Sports claim that there is a ‘big gap’ in valuation between Spurs and West Ham over the Ghana international. Kudus has an £85 million release clause in his current deal.
It’s not thought that West Ham will demand that full fee but, given that Kudus is contracted until 2028, Spurs’ London rivals could hold firm and not budge until that clause is activated. Should that be the case, then Daniel Levy and Thomas Frank must look to take their money elsewhere.
Tottenham Hotspur must exercise caution in Mohammed Kudus interest
There is no doubting that Kudus has the potential to be an important member of the Tottenham Hotspur team. His exploits over the 2023/24 season were head turning as he transitioned to the Premier League in record time. He wasn’t the only West Ham player to underwhelm last term and that campaign certainly won’t define the rest of his career.
There are some hesitations over the player’s temperament. As well as finding himself in a rut last season, Kudus was shown a red card against Spurs, and a subsequent FA ban, for lashing out at Micky van de Ven. Speaking after the game, former West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui said: “Unfortunately Kudus is going to be out for three matches because his behaviour was not good and he knows that.
“He knows he has to improve because this can't happen. I hope it's the last time this happens. I'm sure it is not going to happen [again]. I talked with him and sometimes you don't have to talk a lot about this kind of situation because he knows it was a mistake. I say, for sure, that he will learn about this incident and his behaviour will handle this better in the future."
Spurs should take £85 million elsewhere
Given that huge price tag and potential flaws, that £85 million could perhaps be better spent elsewhere. Fichajes claim that Spurs are ‘closely monitoring’ Atalanta star Ademola Lookman, alongside Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Atletico Madrid.
The report claims that Lookman could be available for as little as €45 million, roughly £38 million. That would be a much better spend of money. Lookman bagged 20 goals and picked up seven assists across all competitions last season and would arrive at Spurs with Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and Conference League experience.
The winger knows what it takes to win competitions too, lifting the Europa League with Atalanta in 2024. He was named in the tournament’s Team of the Season that year.
Spending around £40 million on Lookman would leave another £40 million to spend elsewhere, if Tottenham Hotspur were thinking of unlocking that £85 million Kudus release clause. TEAMtalk claims that Spurs have lodged a £32 million bid to sign Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz.
That is said to have been instantly rejected by the Cottagers, but an increased bid would surely tempt Fulham. Spurs could offer Muniz the opportunity to play European football too.
At 24 years old, there’s a feeling that the best is still to come from the Brazilian, who scored eight Premier League goals last term - that’s three more than Kudus in 1,600 fewer minutes. The West Ham man is a talent, but Tottenham Hotspur appear to hold interest in two alternatives who could provide more for the same price.
