KaVontae Turpin's Arrest And Inside What's Next for Cowboys 'Rocket Ship'

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys' receiver room has gained for itself a lot of attention this offseason.

The controversial trade for George Pickens? Check.

The All-Pro prediction for CeeDee Lamb? Check.

Somebody just got in trouble? Double-check.

As CowboysCountry.com was first to report, KaVontae Turpin was bonded out of jail in Allen on Sunday after spending a day being incarcerated on a pair of misdemeanor charges.

Turpin faces charges on a Class B misdemeanor for possession of marijuana less than two ounces and a Class A misdemeanor for unlawfully carrying a firearm.

Bond was set at $500 for the marijuana charge and at $1,000 for the gun charge, and on Sunday afternoon was released.

So .. what's next?

This is not Turpin's first entanglement with the law; the first one, back in college, caused him to be kicked out of TCU and sent him on a winding path through the USFL before he finally got his chance in the NFL.

Assuming these charges stick, it's disappointing that Turpin would allow himself to backslide here.

What's sad is how familiar this all is, and we've talked about it for years: The period between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp (for the Cowboys, that's July 21 in Oxnard) is the scariest time of all for NFL front offices.

Why? Because that's six weeks of guys on their own ... free to make dumb or even devastating life choices.

As it relates to Turpin, let's hope this stays only in the "dumb'' category.

What about severe punishment from the team or the NFL? No, on the first, unlikely on the second. (Though under the weak-muscled NFLPA-agreed-to CBA, the commissioner can administer any punishment he's in the mood to hand out.)

What about a severe tongue-lashing from somebody around here in charge? Sure ... and maybe that's new coach Brian Schotteheimer's job.

They have big plans for Turpin here, having just given the Pro Bowl return man a handsome new three-year, $18 million contract.

With the top two spots in the depth chart final, behind CeeDee Lamb and Pickens, it is a jumbled picture. Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo are the two names that many believe will be up for the No. 3 receiver role.

Former head coach Mike McCarthy called Turpin a "rocket ship" with the ball in his hands, and we saw that on display at times last season.

Maybe he wins a real role as a receiver, where last season, Turpin totaled 420 yards and two touchdowns from 31 receptions.

Maybe he gets to be a ball-carrier, too; McCarthy did some of that with him in the second half of last year

Turpin this offseason talked about how has a chance to establish himself not only as a star returner but also as a genuine receiving option and more.

“I just say be coachable, be available,'' Turpin said on how he can take advantage of his opportunities. “Let my guys believe in me, that's what I'm here for. I just signed a contract, so that's what I'm here for, and I'm just trying to be a playmaker, be that big playmaker I was for the last two years with the ball in my hands.”

Good, KaVontae. Put the ball in your hands ... so there's no room for other junk. And be a genuine nightmare for defenses, and not for the cops or your own team, OK?
