The Dallas Cowboys are just a few months away from starting the 2025 season, but one of their best players has just landed in some legal trouble.
Special teams star KaVontae Turpin, an All-Pro last season, has been arrested for weapon and marijuana charges, according to court records in Collin County, Texas.
The 28-year-old player was booked into the county jail for unlawfully carrying a gun and marijuana possession - two misdemeanor offenses. His bond was listed at $500.
Turpin has played for the Cowboys for the last three seasons, entering the league after initially going undrafted back in 2019. Before his time with the Cowboys, he rose to prominence as a star in the USFL - now part of the UFL - with the New Jersey Generals.
Turpin was named the USFL's Most Valuable Player in 2022, as he led the league in receiving yards while also scoring touchdowns on the ground, through the air and on special teams. The Generals ended the 2022 season in the USFL playoffs, and Turpin received interest from multiple NFL teams.
He would go on to sign with the Cowboys later that year, and made an immediate impact. After returning a punt and a kick for a touchdown for a touchdown in the same preseason game, it was clear that Dallas would find a place for him on the team.
He was an important part of the team's special teams unit for the 2022 season, and appeared in all 17 games. Turpin was rewarded with the first Pro Bowl appearance of his career.
He would repeat that feat in 2024, also earning first-team All-Pro honors as the league's best kick returner.
The Cowboys will look to bounce back from a frustrating 2024 season in which they missed the playoffs. Head coach Mike McCarthy is out and has been replaced by Brian Schottenheimer, and Dak Prescott is back after missing most of the previous season with an injury.
We'll see what the future holds for the Cowboys, and for Turpin after his arrest with just a few weeks left until the start of the 2024 NFL season.
