The New York Jets have the 12th most cap space in the NFL ($29.7 million), per Over The Cap.
After June 5, the Jets received a surge of new money thanks to the Post-June 1 designations on linebacker C.J. Mosley and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Some have speculated that it could mean a splash move is coming for the Jets. However, one analyst believes the opposite is coming.
“I don’t think there is going to be any other roster additions or moves of consequence. I don’t think the Jets are going to make some trade for a veteran receiver or defensive lineman this month. When we get into late August, when we get into post-preseason, we get into the waiver wires, I could see a couple of minor moves around the edges for veterans, but I don’t think we are going to see any of that in July,” Jets analyst Joe Caporoso said during his “Badlands” prediction episode.
The Jets Are Rocking With Their Boys for Better or for Worse
There have been a lot of changes to the roster over the last couple of months. A new regime has taken over, and clearly, their fingerprints are all over this roster.
However, this isn’t a perfect outfit. The Jets won five games this past season, and they appear a lot less talented this time around. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic’s “one lingering question” for the Jets ahead of training camp was their defensive line depth.
“When the Jets defense was at its best under Robert Saleh, the defensive line dominated up front with a deep bench of pass rushers, both from the edge and the interior. They lacked that in 2024, and an argument could be made that the depth has actually gotten worse this offseason, at least on paper,” Rosenblatt said.
Not everyone feels that way, though.
NFL Insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently said that, “The Jets are another more-talented-than-you-think team. Both lines of scrimmage are loaded with first-rounders, and there are fewer holes than people may realize (and not one, at this point, that makes the team look truly deficient at a spot).”
The proof will be in the pudding when the 2025 season arrives.
One Juicy July Prediction Ahead of Training Camp
The Jets might not be making any outside splashy additions this month, but Caporoso did predict something historic will shake in July.
“I’m not going to change my tune, I’m going to predict [that] by the end of the month, both Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson get new contracts from the team. Each of which are slightly over $30 million per year,” Caporoso predicted for “Badlands.” “If I had to pick one of the two that happens first, I’m going with Sauce, then Garrett shortly after. I think both get done in July, really before training camp ramps up.”
Adding players from outside of the organization is fun, but keeping your own is even more exhilarating. Bluntly, the Jets haven’t had a lot of players worth paying in recent years. That has finally changed, and it’s time to pay the piper.
