TV show paused as host pays tribute to Diogo Jota with'powerful'message

Diogo Jota's tragic death has touched lives even outside the sporting world.

On Thursday, it was announced that the Liverpool star and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a single-car accident in Spain after Jota's Lamborghini blew a tire as he attempted to overtake. Over the weekend, both men were laid to rest in Portugal, with various members of the club paying their respects.

But as Jota's current and former teammates paid their respects to the late Liverpool ace, it turned out that his death also rocked the pop culture world – with 'Sunday Brunch' hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy honoring his memory during a recent episode.

"Before we get on with the show, there has been some really tragic news this week about Dioo Jota, and being a Liverpool fan," Lovejoy began [h/t The Daily Mail]. As he continued, Rimmer added: "It's shocking. [Guest Peter Hooton] and I were talking in makeup.

"A human tragedy, a 28-year-old man, who has just got married and had two young children. I think the way in which the football community has come together is very, very powerful."

Hooton shared his thoughts on the situation, stating: "The way people have rallied round. It's an absolutely devastating thing for everyone, for the family, for Liverpool fans and just football in general. You can see that with the Club World Cup, with all the tributes in America, before the entire studio paid tribute to Diogo's family."

Well-wishers leave flowers at a memorial set up close to Anfield football ground for their Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in Liverpool, north-west England July 3, 2025. Liverpool striker Diogo Jota died along with his brother early July 3, 2025 in a road accident in northwest Spain, the Spanish Civil Guard said. The accident occurred on a highway in the province of Zamora. The vehicle "left the road" before bursting into flames, the Civil Guard said, adding that the two passengers, Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Felipe, also a professional footballer, were deceased

Since Jota's death, his former clubs, teammates and managers have come out in force in sharing their thoughts on the star's heartbreaking passing. Among those who have reached out to Jota and Silva's family is soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who offered a message to the family after missing the funeral.

Ronaldo personally reached out to his former teammate's family after not being present at the funeral, after the 40-year-old posted a message on social media proclaiming he would be there for the family.

"It doesn't make sense," Ronaldo's tribute on social media read. "We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married.

"To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot also shared his thoughts on his star's passing, posting a lengthy statement in the aftermath of the confusion.

"The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding. In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this," Slot's statement read.

"My condolences go to Diogo’s wife, Rute, their three beautiful children and to the parents of Diogo and Andre Silva. When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten."
