‘Mourns The Passing’: Las Vegas Raiders Hall Of Fame Legend Died From Drowning

On Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders remembered a legend who died on June 11th, giving a special tribute to a fan that is usually reserved for former players. Per an obituary in the Times-Herald, Steve Mortara died from an accidental drowning at his home.

Mortara was known as a super fan of the Raiders. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio for his avid fandom of the team.

“Steve soon became known as “Raider Mort” throughout the Bay Area. He hosted a TV show called Raider Talk Raw and a radio program called The Raider Mort Report,” the obituary reads. “And Steve was also an NFL analyst for a radio show titled The Game. Steve’s master of ceremonies work included serving as MC for Oakland Raiders’ team milestones.”

On Sunday night, the Raiders released a statement remembering the Hall of Fame fan.

“The Raiders Family mourns the passing of Steve Mortara, better known to fans everywhere as “Raider Mort.” A deeply passionate fan of the Silver and Black and a cherished part of the Raider Nation, Mort attended games all over the world and supported the Raiders with a rare and ardent fervor,” the statement reads.

“An expert on team history and trivia, Mort’s life-long love of the Raiders was an inspiration to fans everywhere. The prayers of the Raider Nation are with Mort’s family at this time.”

Fans on social media remembered Mortara.

“Mort was a regular caller to Gary Radnich’s great radio show. Miss those days. Condolences to his family and friends,” wrote a fan.

“Sincere condolences to his family. RIP Raider Mort,” posted another.
