Arsenal have a good start to the summer transfer window with a couple of signings.
The Gunners confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea earlier this month.
On Sunday, the club finally announced the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
In his first Arsenal interview, the midfielder was posed a question on the Spanish history at the club.
The likes of Antonio Reyes, Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla and Hector Bellerin were mentioned.
However, Zubimendi was quick to reply with Nacho Monreal’s name.
He said: “Nacho Monreal too! I hope I can live up to all of them.”
Monreal was certainly pleased with the comments and praised Zubimendi on Instagram stories.
The Spaniard shared a screenshot of the interview saying: “You will become the best of all. 100%”.
Monreal was an unsung hero during his successful career at Arsenal. The Spaniard made 251 appearances between 2013 and 2019, winning three FA Cups during that period.
The left-back joined Sociedad in the summer of 2019. He made 69 appearances for the Basque outfit over three seasons before calling time on his career. Zubimendi played alongside him.
It was a surprise that Monreal’s name was not mentioned by the reporter, but Zubimendi was quick to point out. He has certainly made a good impression on the fans rightaway.
The 26-year-old has joined the Gunners for a reported fee of €65 million. He comes with a big reputation from La Liga, where he has impressed with his distribution in tight spaces.
Zubimendi has a preference to distribute through the middle more than sideways. He is strong when it comes to aerial duels and should be an upgrade in the number six position.
The Sociedad graduate won’t be the only midfield arrival this summer. The Gunners are expected to confirm the arrival of Brentford captain Christian Norgaard pretty soon.
