Arsenal 'handed' major Rodrygo transfer blow as European rivals 'make approach'

Arsenal have reportedly been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with the winger this summer amid ongoing speculation over his long-term future in the Spanish capital. Rodrygo has struggled for game time under new head coach Xabi Alonso during this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, further fuelling rumours of a potential departure.

Despite mixed reports, with some suggesting the player is determined to fight for his place at Madrid, Arsenal have been named as a possible destination should he choose to move on. Mikel Arteta is expected to significantly strengthen his attacking options this summer, with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres a key target, alongside Chelsea ’s Noni Madueke.

Now, a report from ESPN Brazil claims Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League rivals Manchester City have joined Arsenal in contacting the player’s entourage to express their interest. While Rodrygo is still said to prefer staying in Madrid, interest from Europe’s top clubs could reportedly change things.

PSG are undoubtedly one of the most exciting projects in world football, having secured their first-ever Champions League title at the end of May. Luis Enrique’s side boasts a wealth of attacking talent, though Rodrygo would face stiff competition for a starting spot from the likes of Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid are expected to discuss Rodrygo’s future once their Club World Cup campaign concludes, with a potential asking price in the region of £77 million. Alonso’s side are currently in the semi-finals and are set to face PSG on Wednesday night.

Alonso briefly addressed Rodrygo’s situation ahead of their quarter-final clash with Borussia Dortmund earlier this week, telling reporters: “I’m sure Rodrygo can return to his best form. I spoke with him; he’s positive, eager, and ready when needed.”
