Dagny's disappointment

West Ham's women's star Dagný Brynjarsdóttir was left hugely disappointed after her Iceland side were knocked out of the European Championships after just two games.

Having been beaten 1-0 by Finland in their opening fixture of the tournament last Wednesday, a 2-0 defeat against hosts Switzerland in the delightfully-monickered Wankdorf Stadium on Sunday night resulted in the Icelandics' elimination. Their final fixture of the competition comes against current group leaders Norway on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile fellow Hammers Eva Nyström and Oona Siren also tasted defeat as Finland went down 2-1 to a later Norway winner in their second outing of the Euros, despite having largely dominated the game. The Fins must now beat hosts Switzerland in their final group match in order to secure passage through to the knockout stage.

Andre, future giant?

17-year-old forward Andre Dike has put pen to paper on his first ever professional contract.

Joined by his family for the event at the club's Rush Green training complex, Dike enjoyed a productive season with the nde 18s in 2024/25 and has been rewarded for his fine form with a pro deal.

Dike, who scored 15 goals in just 19 games told West Ham's website: "There aren't any footballers in my family that have become professional, so it’s special to be the first one. It means a lot to my family and our family back home in Nigeria. It's just a great day. It's something I've worked on for a long, long time. For it to actually happen and become a reality, it's great."

Robson's boys returns

West Ham's Under 21/development squad returned to training on Friday, beginning their pre-season program a few days ahead of the senior squad who reconvene this week ahead of a trip to Switzerland.

Joined by recent arrival Daniel Cummings, who completed his move from Celtic last week and Mohamadou Kanté, who spent last season on loan in Ligue 2 with divisional winners Paris FC, the players began their busy schedule under the guidance of manager Mark Robson.

"It’s a busier schedule than previous years, which is intentional," said Robson, who is looking ahead to a hectic pre-season programme. "We’ve got a large squad at the moment and want to give everyone opportunities to play and get minutes during this period.

"They’re tough fixtures, games against men, but that’s the next level these boys are striving to reach. These tests are exactly what they need. Ultimately, our goal is always to help players make that step into the first team."
