Everton 2024-25 Season Review: Loaned-out Players Recap

Tyler Onyango

Onyango started off his season at League One side Stockport County in a CB/RB role despite his usual midfield role. Any momentum he had was slowly lost as he suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Onyango was however able to make a return to the U21s in April, completing 45 minutes in a 4-2 loss to Manchester United.

As his contract expires this summer, we’ll have to wait and see how much more potential time the 22-year-old has with the Toffees.

Harry Tyrer

Tyrer had about as good of a loan spell as a goalkeeper could, becoming League One side Blackpool’s number one, starting 38 games and recording 12 clean sheets.

Tyrer is currently the only other goalkeeper on Everton’s roster (minus Jordan Pickford) following Virginia and Begovic’s departures. We’ll have to see if the 23-year-old can step up to the task as Pickford’s backup or if a new signing and a potential loan departure for Tyrer is on the cards.

Elijah Campbell

The 20-year-old CB had a decent season at Scottish side Ross County. Campbell solidified a starting CB role, while also playing in a LM/LWB role as well. Campbell made 24 appearances, assisting once while picking up a handful of yellow cards along the way. Another loan should likely be in the cards for the soon-to-be 21-year-old.

Jenson Metcalfe

It was an up-and-down season for the 20-year-old midfielder. He featured sparingly at the start of the season for League 2 side Chesterfield before being left out of the squad from November til around late January. He then seemed to win back his starting position later on in the season, leading his side to a 7th place finish.

It was Chesterfield’s first season back in the League 2 in nearly seven years, so there were bound to be some growing pains and player rotations. Expect another loan for Metclafe next season.

Francis Okoronkwo

It was a relatively frustrating season for the 20-year-old. Scoring in Salford City’s first match of the season, Okoronkwo struggled to make much more of an impact. He added two more goals to his resume with a limited amount of time on the pitch. The Blues will look to send the striker out on loan again next season.

Reece Welch

Quite an odd one for the promising (and towering) 6’6” defender Reece Welch. Welch was with Belgian side Deinze for only two months before the club declared bankruptcy and the 21-year-old swiftly returned to the Blues. Welch proceed to captain and play every minute for the U21s to end his season on a high. Let’s see if he can make the jump to the first team next season.

Harrison Armstrong

The now 18-year-old Armstrong made the match day squad and even made three brief appearances in Everton’s first half of the season. He was then loaned out to Championship side Derby County where he started getting some serious attention.

It took a bit of time for Armstrong to settle in to his new club before playing almost every minute of Derby County’s last 12 matches of the season and becoming a fan favorite in the process.

David Moyes has recently shared that Armstrong will be in his preseason plans, and if things go according to plan, we could see Armstrong make an instant impact with the first team this upcoming season.
