Manchester City have sacrificed £55million following their early exit from the Club World Cup.

The 10-time English champions enjoyed a strong start to the competition after comfortably sweeping aside Wydad AC, Al-Ain and Juventus in the group stage.

Man City scored 13 goals in their opening three matches to top Group G, with Juventus finishing in second spot.

The goals kept flowing for Pep Guardiola’s side in their round-of-16 clash against Al-Hilal, but they suffered a 4-3 defeat to the Saudi Pro League side in Orlando.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the club will be “very disappointed” following their Club World Cup exit.

Premier League rivals Chelsea remain in the competition after beating Palmeiras 2-1 in their quarter-final clash on Saturday (5 July).

Man City positive revealed after Club World Cup blow

Borson revealed Guardiola’s side could have earned an extra £55million if they had won the Club World Cup.

He told Football Insider: “The reality is if they’d have won it, they’d have got another $75million (£55million), broadly.

“They have sacrificed £75million dollars.

“Now, I guess the positive side is you get another two weeks of rest and pre-season, and we don’t know the impact from a footballing perspective that it would have on Chelsea, for example, if they were to get to the final.

“But I think City will look at it and be very disappointed because once you’ve got there, once you’ve won three games in the first phase, got a relatively easy round-of-16 draw, and don’t get me wrong, Al-Hilal played very well and deserved to go through, but City will feel as though they’ve really thrown it away.

“They have thrown away mega money in the context of a football club’s profit and loss.”
