Manchester United could soon be in line for a timely cash injection as interest in former academy graduate Maxi Oyedele continues to mount.

Oyedele left Old Trafford last August, sealing a surprise permanent switch to Polish club Legia Warsaw. He enjoyed a stellar debut campaign in Poland last term and is now being linked with clubs right across Europe.

The 20-year-old made 24 appearances in his debut campaign at Legia, helping them win the Polish Cup for a 21st time. He also helped them reach the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.

Having made such a telling impression, the former Forest Green Rovers loanee is now being linked with a cluster of clubs, including German outfits Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen.

The defensive midfielder, who can also operate at the back, was sold by United last summer for a small initial fee, which included a substantial future sell-on clause to ensure profit in the event of him making a name for himself in Poland.

It is understood Oyedele has a release clause in his Legia contract worth €6million (£5.18m at the current exchange rate). It has been widely reported that the sell-on clause United inserted into the deal was worth 40 per cent, meaning they stand to bank just north of £2m.

In a summer in which sales are crucial for United to generate money to raise funds for new arrivals, every penny they secure will be welcomed.

United improved their success rate in the seller's market in last summer's transfer window, offloading a crop of players they felt had either run out of time at Old Trafford or were unlikely to ever make the grade.

As was the case with Oyedele's switch to Legia, United inserted sell-on clauses into a several deals that saw youngsters offloaded. Any funds the Reds bank via sell-on clauses will assist them in their efforts to remain compliant with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

United also inserted a buy-back clause into the deal that saw Oyedele move to Poland, meaning they have the option to re-sign him. He has also been linked with a return to England amid interest from unnamed Championship clubs.
