Manchester United have added Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini to their wishlist.
United Face Premier League Competition for Scalvini
Manchester United are showing interest in Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini, as per CaughtOffside. He is one of Italy’s most promising young defenders at the moment.
He had an injury-hit season, first with knee and later a shoulder issue. However, he is still a top target in Europe. He has three years remaining on his contract with Atalanta. But, he is likely to be in the market for about £52m.
He is on the radar of top sides including Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle as well. United see Scalvini as a great option for their youth-focused system. He already has a top career in Serie A and Europa League at such an early age. He made his debut at just 17.
Scalvini has turned into a regular starter for the Italian side. He is calm, has awareness, and has a good passing range.
Youngster Seen as Long-Term Replacement
Defender Jonny Evans is retiring and Victor Lindelof is moving on. So, Utd are in need of options at the back. Head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to reshape the squad. Scalvini fits the bill for a long-term solution.
The Red Devils have already shown they are willing to back young defenders. Last year they brought in Leny Yoro from Lille and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal’s youth ranks. Both of whom are now regulars in the senior team. Scalvini could be the next in line, offering both depth and future leadership.
Convincing him to join a side currently outside the Champions League will be a task. He has got interest from Serie A giants Juventus, Inter, and Napoli as well. United will need to act swiftly and sell Amorim’s project well. If they can land Scalvini, it could be another strong step in rebuilding the club’s backline.
