Leeds United have desperate holes in their squad that need to be filled before their return to the Premier League.

Three new faces have already made the move to Elland Road, including Jaka Bijol, who was regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A.

Gabriel Gudmundsson could be next through the door at Leeds, with the Swede close to finalising a move to West Yorkshire; however, he is not the only left-back on the radar of fans.

Leeds are looking to the future, too, with several academy talents signing on the dotted line.

Coban Bird signs professional contract at Elland Road

Following the departure of Junior Firpo after his contract expired in LS11, Leeds are short on numbers when it comes to the left-back position.

Max Wober filled in on the left for Farke at points last season, but the Austrian international has also left and joined Werder Bremen on loan, with Sam Byram not yet renewing either.

Leeds have recently announced an update on left-backs, though (6 July), as Coban Bird signed his first professional contract with the Whites.

Bird was a regular with the Under-18s last term, also featuring for Scott Gardner’s Under-21s side in the Premier League 2 and National League Cup.

Bird, 18, scored three times during the previous campaign, which included notable strikes from distance against Manchester City and Blackburn.

The young defender is set to continue his development at Thorp Arch after signing a two-year deal.

Path to the first team for Bird

Whilst it is unlikely to expect Bird to feature for Leeds in the Premier League next season, the path to the first team is open for the youngster

Farke is short of options in that position, and if Bird continues to develop, then he could force his way into the squad at Thorp Arch.

United will need another left-back to complement Gudmundsson, and the Whites could pounce and hijack the signing of El Hadji Malick Diouf from under the nose of West Ham.
