Leeds United-linked striker Callum Wilson is weighing up his options after leaving Newcastle United. The former Bournemouth striker is a free agent following the expiry of his Magpies contract last week.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was keen to keep Wilson at St James' Park with an incentivised deal on the table for the ex-AFC Bournemouth star. Our sister title Chronicle Live says Wilson rejected one offer last week but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the player could prolong his Magpies stay.
Lee Ryder, Newcastle correspondent for Chronicle Live, wrote: "Talks have remained in place with the England international currently on pundit duty at the FIFA World Club Cup. Wilson is believed to have other options on the table and appeared to say goodbye to supporters at the end of last term.
"Wilson has not commented publicly on his situation at Newcastle and it remains to be seen if he appears back at Benton for pre-season." Howe expressed his desire to retain Wilson's services following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
Speaking after their defeat to Everton, Howe said: “Well, let's wait and see. We're going to sit down and talk with his representatives. What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are.
“Really professional, brave. I mean, to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment."
Newcastle confirmed contract talks with Wilson and goalkeeper John Ruddy on June 6. The Premier League club have today agreed an extension for Ruddy. It is expected the former Norwich City and Everton goalkeeper will remain on Tyneside as a back-up player and will continue a mentor role working behind the scenes.
As for Leeds, a new striker is high on their list of transfer priorities. They have been linked with a raft of attacking players in England and Europe since gaining promotion to the Premier League.
