The reigning German champions have inked a two-year deal with Wenyen Gabriel, 28, who played 164 NBA games across stints with the Lakers, Kings, Blazers, Pelicans, Grizzlies, and more. His most impactful run came with LeBron James’ Lakers, where he averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in the 2022–23 season.
He arrives from Panathinaikos, where he filled in seamlessly during the Greek powerhouse’s EuroLeague campaign—posting 6.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in 23 contests. Before that, he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv and was the top shot-blocker at the 2023 FIBA World Cup for South Sudan, averaging 2.6 blocks per game.
A refugee-turned-Olympian, Gabriel has helped lead South Sudan’s meteoric rise in international basketball, and was also a key figure in the team’s Paris 2024 Olympic run.
“I want to bring my passion, energy, and hustle to the team,” Gabriel said. “My goals are clear: make the playoffs and reach the Final Four.”
Bayern sporting director Dragan Tarlac is confident Gabriel will be a difference-maker:
“Wenyen’s defensive presence is huge, and his work ethic makes him the perfect teammate. We’re excited to welcome him to Munich.”
