Nayef Aguerd has endured a miserable spell at West Ham.

Aguerd, 29, moved to the London Stadium in 2022 for £30million from Rennes, but injuries and poor performances have plagued his time in East London.

The Moroccan spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad and was left out of the squad entirely for nine of their last 10 La Liga games.

The defender is now almost certain to be out the door this summer as Graham Potter looks to build his squad ready for his first full season in charge.

Aguerd becomes a top target for Marseille

A return to France looks to be on the cards for Aguerd, just three seasons after his departure from Rennes.

L’Equipe (7 July) has reported that the Moroccan is a top target for French giants Marseille this summer.

The former European champions have identified the position of central defender as the priority for their summer business, ahead of their return to the Champions League.

Any deal for Aguerd is complicated due to his high wages and West Ham‘s likely demand for a significant fee at the London Stadium.

A loan deal with an option or obligation to buy is not ruled out at this time.

Aguerd need to be part of West Ham clear-out

The Hammers currently hold a lot of deadwood at the club, and a major clear-out is needed to progress.

Aguerd is one of those who need to be out of the door this summer, as he has no future at the London Stadium under Potter.

The defender’s play style doesn’t suit the physicality required for the Premier League, as he is more of a ball-playing defender rather than focusing on the basics.

Aguerd was a transfer mistake, and West Ham now need to do their best to rectify it, even if that means incurring a financial loss on him.
