Tyrell Malacia will be absent for the start of Manchester United's pre-season training preparations at Carrington today (Monday) after informing the club of his desire to move on.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News last week, the left back has informed United he wants to leave this summer and embark on a new chapter elsewhere.

Alongside Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony, Malacia is one of five players to have informed United about desire to leave, meaning he is not scheduled to return to Carrington until later this month provided that an exit is not sorted beforehand.

The Dutchman spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven but struggled to make a telling impact, making just 12 appearances. It is understood the Eredivisie champions decided back in April they had no plans to sign him on a permanent basis.

Signed from Feyenoord in July 2022, Malacia's United career has been ravaged by injuries. He has made just 47 appearances for the club and 39 of those were made in his debut season in England.

He required two knee operations following the 2022/23 campaign and that resulted in him missing the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign. He made his long-awaited return by starting United's 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League last November.

That was his first of eight appearances he won under Ruben Amorim before being sent out on loan in February for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign. However, his return to his homeland failed to work out in the way he would have hoped for.

As a result of failing to make his mark at PSV, United are unlikely to be inundated with offers for the defender, who will turn 26 next month. Having signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford back in 2022, United need to sell him for £3.22million to avoid a loss under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

It means Malacia could be a relatively cheap pick up for a club that does not have the biggest of budgets and is in need of a left-back. As a result, it could potentially open the door for him to seal a return to Feyenoord.

Tyrell Malacia will not be joining PSV Eindhoven on a permanent deal.

Malacia joined the Dutch outfit, who are under the stewardship of head coach and former United striker Robin van Persie, as a nine-year-old back in 2008 and spent 14 years at the club before moving to Old Trafford.

The Eredivisie outfit are likely to be on the hunt for a new left-back this summer after selling Quilindschy Hartman to Burnley.

It is important to stress at this stage that Malacia has not been linked with a return to his former club, but there is logic behind the theory that Feyenoord may consider a move for the United defender at some point amid their need for a left-back.

He knows the club and the Eredivisie inside out, meaning it could be a logical move for him to try and get his career back on track after a challenging couple of years.
